Oakcrest High School valedictorian Gary Carlson and salutatorian Laina Lusk will be the featured speakers at the school’s 49th annual commencement ceremony 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 16 at the football stadium.

Carlson, of Mays Landing, plans to attend Harvard University this fall and has been accepted into the engineering program. He is the president of the National Honor Society and a four-year varsity athlete in soccer, swimming and track.

Lusk, of Mays Landing, plans to attend Bucknell University in the fall and will pursue a degree in neuroscience in hopes of eventually becoming a neuropsychologist.

She is the vice president of the French Club, secretary for the Math Club, involved with the Oakcrest Marching Ambassadors, and a member of the National Honor Society. She is a National Merit Award finalist and received the AP Scholar Award with Distinction.

Rounding out the top five of this year’s graduating class are Michael Thomas Galli of Mullica Township, third; Jacob Peter Taylor of Mays Landing, fourth; and Rachel Carlson of Egg Harbor City, fifth.

Galli will also be attending Harvard in the fall. He plans to major in engineering and play baseball for the school. Last February, instead of going out for the boys varsity swim team, Galli tried out for the school play, “High School Musical 2.” He landed the lead role of Troy, the part popularized by Zac Efron in the Disney movie.

Taylor will be attending Rowan University in fall. He will major in civil engineering and has aspirations of becoming a civil engineer.

Carlson will be attending the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey in the fall. She plans to pursue a degree in physical therapy. She was a four-year varsity athlete at Oakcrest and will be playing soccer and running track at Stockton.
