From The Press of Atlantic City — A unanimous vote Tuesday by Township Council means the Greater Egg Harbor Regional High School District can stick to its fiscal plan for the upcoming year, despite voters rejecting it.
When a school budget fails to gain the approval of the majority of voters, elected municipal officials from the taxing districts that support the school review the budget and make any cost-cutting recommendations before voting on it. If a local governing body votes down the budget, the county superintendent of schools reviews it before sending it to the state Department of Education.
Unanimous decisions affirming the $67.6 million budget were made by Egg Harbor City Council May 7 and Hamilton Township Committee May 5. Mullica Township Committee voted 3-2 along party lines in favor of the $24.7 million levy a week ago.
Mullica and Hamilton voters shot down the budget on election day; those in Galloway and Egg Harbor City passed it.
