The 1,950-acre fire in Wharton State Forest became fully contained Monday morning, and firefighters hoped another half-inch of rain overnight, the amount that fell Saturday, would extinguish it.

Officials are confident the fire won’t breach its widest perimeter, even though ground cover continues to smolder, said Michael Drake, spokesman for the Forest Fire Service. A small crew will patrol the fire today, but firefighters have stopped monitoring at night.

The fire began last Tuesday in adjacent Waterford Township. Although it spread quickly, no one has been injured or had private property damaged. The cause has not been determined.
